Analogue (HD-TVI) vs IP
Analogue cameras run on coax (BNC) cable carrying both video and power, recorded on a DVR. Cheaper per channel, simple to install, great for straightforward retrofits.
IP cameras send video over a single Ethernet (CAT5e/6) cable which also powers them (PoE), recorded on an NVR. Sharper detail at higher resolutions and easier long cable runs.
DVR vs NVR
A DVR (Digital Video Recorder) accepts analogue/HD-TVI cameras over coax and needs a separate power supply for each camera.
An NVR (Network Video Recorder) accepts IP cameras over PoE Ethernet — one cable per camera does both video and power, no extra PSU needed.
How many channels?
Always round up to the next standard size (4 / 8 / 16 channels) and leave at least one spare port for future expansion. The kit builder does this automatically based on how many cameras you choose.
Camera quality tiers
Essential — solid everyday HD/3K coverage for driveways and gardens.
Advanced — sharper 3-5MP with two-way audio, good for entrances.
Pro — 4K/8MP for number plates, faces and detail at distance.
